I'm Jennifer Spade and have been an Ashland native since 1998. Prior to, I was born and raised in the Kenova, WV area and attended Buffalo High School and Marshall University where I hold a bachelor's and master's degree in Art Education.

I began my teaching career at Hager, Hatcher, and Poage elementary schools. I took some time off to pursue my masters and also taught at Ashland Community and Technical College prior to coming to Blazer 13 years ago.

I'm married to Matt Spade, who is employed as a district administrator for Boyd County Schools. We have 3 children Andrew, (Blazer class of 2009 and University of Louisville, 2014), Emma (Blazer class of 2019), and Will (Blazer Class of 2020).

Art relates to every subject, Literature, Science, Math, History, Culture, Psychology, and transcends 100 languages. It was the first language! I teach a little bit of everything as it relates to art. I believe art is life and in my classroom we learn life lessons that will carry students beyond the high school halls. Here are 7 life lessons we learn in art class:

  1. The experience is what counts. It’s all about the process.
  2. Go with the Flow. Take the first step when you don’t know what to do.
  3. Problem Solving. Creativity has no boundaries.
  4. You can’t please everyone.  No matter what you do, everyone has their opinions.
  5. Take Risks. Art teaches us it’s ok to make mistakes and with every mistake, you learn something.
  6. How to make something from nothing. Everything has a purpose no matter how small, building on the little things will surely get you somewhere.
  7. Determination is Key.  Art teaches us to persevere and when you are determined, nothing can stop you.
