2018 Summer Feed Program 2018 Summer Feed Program

The Ashland Independent School District is excited to announce our participation in the KY Summer Food Service Program.  The Summer Feed Program provides free meals to children and teens 18 years and under.  Crabbe Elementary will be serving breakfast and lunch daily Monday through Friday.  Breakfast will be served from 8:00 am - 9:00 am.  Lunch will be served 11:00 am - 1:00 pm.  We encourage our families to take advantage of the 2018 Summer Feed Program at Crabbe Elementary.  If you have questions concerning the program please contact Linda Calhoun at 327-2706.

Born Learning Academy Session

Our last session of Born Learning Academy will be on May 1st from 5:30-7:00 PM. As always, this is open to Crabbe families with children ages 0-5. Food is catered, and the prizes are amazing!  Don't miss this!

Our graduation ceremony for Born Learning Academy will be on May 8th beginning at 5:30 PM.

2018 Project ignite - Exploring Aviation - Application Deadline Extended to 5/25 2018 Project Ignite Logo

Project IGNITE is a summer camp designed for students to experience science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics through hands-on investigations that promote innovation and creativity.  The focus this year will be “Exploring AVIATION”!  Students will spend four exhilarating days rotating through five learning activities designed to peak interest and explore the wide world of flight.  The week will conclude with a field trip to the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton, Ohio, the birthplace of flight. Students won’t want to miss this opportunity to build new skills that peak curiosity and “ignite” ingenuity.

New KY Immunization Requirements coming in 2018

Effective July 1, 2018 all students in kindergarten through twelfth grade must show proof of having received two doses of Hepatitis A vaccine to attend school, and students age 16 or older, must show proof of having received two doses of Meningococcal ACWY vaccine (MenACWY) to attend school.  Please refer to the attached document for more information.

Registration for Head Start, Preschool and Primary School (formerly kindergarten and first grade students) will be held in the Ashland Independent School District during the week of March 26- March 30, 2018.  Registration hours are 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily Monday through Friday.   Evening hours are available on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Ashland Middle School needs your vote!  In February AMS was named the Kentucky winner in the National Samsung Solve for Tomorrow Competition!  Now they are a National Top 10 Finalist!  As a Finalist they have won $50,000 and are now in a social media competition to win one of three national spots and a $150,000 grand prize.

McKinney-Vento Grant available for homeless assistance

The Ashland Independent School District receives the McKinney-Vento grant. This grant allows our schools to help families who are in transition or homeless. If you are homeless or in transition and you need assistance please call Christine Scott, homeless coordinator at 606-327-2706.

A message from the Superintendent

Our district has received multiple threats towards our schools. Each threat has been taken seriously and investigated fully with the assistance of the Ashland Police Dept. Arrests have been made in connection to these threats. As always, our first priority is the safety of our students, staff, and families. District Governor's Cup Results

Crabbe Elementary competed on Saturday, February 10th at Hager Elementary for the District Governor's Cup Academic Competition.  We had several winners!

Our FPS (Future Problem Solving) came in 1st place, and moves on to Regionals!

Our Quick Recall team came in 3rd place.

Cash C. placed 3rd in Social Studies, and moves on to Regionals!

Grayson C. placed 2nd in Written Composition, and moves on to Regionals!

Harley A. placed 4th in Written Composition, and moves on to Regionals!

Born Learning Academy Session

The United Way Born Learning Academy has two upcoming sessions.  Session Three will be March 13th from 5:30 to 7 and will be catered.  Session Four will be March 27th from 5:30 to 7 and will be catered.  Each person will receive a $10 gift card to cover gasoline expenses.  Door prizes will be given, and each participant will receive items we will use during our activities, free of charge! We learn how to prepare our children for school, starting when they are born.  Free babysitting is provided for the kiddos!

Email Migration

On Thursday evening, 1/25/18, the Ashand Independent Schools will be migrating to a new email system.  Public communication via email for all staff and students will be down starting at 5:00 pm on Thursday and could possibly last in to the day on Friday.  Please check this post for the progress of the conversion.  Updates will be added as they come to us from the Kentucky Department of Education.

2 Hour Delay on Friday, January 19, 2018

Ashland Independent Schools will be on a 2 hour delay, Friday, January 19. 2018. Please be reminded that buses will pick up students exactly 2 hours later than their normal time. All staff, with the exception of our district maintenance department, will report to work under the 2 hour delay schedule.

Head Start / Preschool Schedule for Wednesday, 1/3/18

​The Ashland Head Start schedule for Wednesday, January 3rd will be as follows:

  • Morning only classes will be cancelled.
  • All day classes will report on a two hour delay.
  • Afternoon only classes will report on a regular schedule.

Hey Tigers! Do you know someone who would love to be the owner of our 1st place Festival of Trees entry? Here's their chance!

All they need to do is purchase a raffle ticket from you for a chance to win! One raffle ticket costs $1, or they can get 6 entries for $5. Please make sure they fill out the ticket with their name and phone number so we can contact the winner on Monday, December 18th.

Raffle tickets must be turned in to your teacher on Friday, December 15th!

Mrs. Barber's 4th grade class claims the House Cup for their amazing attendance during the week of October 30th!  Their class had a 97% attendance rate! Keep it up! yes

On Monday, November 6, our Crabbe STLP competed at the STLP Fall Showcase Regional Competition.  As a result of their amazing project and presentation, they qualified for the State Competition in the Spring! Way to go! smiley

Veteran's Day Ceremonies Veteran's Day Ceremonies

Crabbe's Annual Veteran's Day Ceremony will be held on November 9, 2017 at 1:30 pm.  This will take place in the gymnasium.  Invited to attend are:  Local Veterans, the Public, Crabbe Students in grades 3-5 plus their family members.

Kindergarten, first, and second grade students will attend a shortened ceremony at 9:30 am. Veterans and family members of these students are welcome to attend this ceremony.

Festival of Trees 2017 Festival of Trees Ornaments

Festival of Trees is right around the corner and our school will be entering a tree with the title 'Don't Stop Believin' Any student who would like to help with our Crabbe tree should choose one of the two ornaments pictured and turn in to their teacher by Monday, November 6th. The tree is white and the ornaments are bright neon colors; no pastels or muted colors. The first ornament is very simple... just a brightly painted pine cone. The second is a mushroom made from the bottoms of plastic Easter eggs, white paint, and a stick. Again, ornaments need to be in by November 6th. For more information, contact Dee Williams.

Our Scholastic Book Fair is a reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It's a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child's reading habits.

Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

It's time for our annual pumpkin/gourd decorating contest! Entries may be dropped off in our school library media ceter from Monday, October 23rd through Friday, October 27th. 

Contest Rules:

-You may use pumpkins or gourds or both to create your project.

-Absolutely no carved entries. Pumpkins/Gourds that have carved, poked, or punctured skin will be disqualified. To decorate you can use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or other craft items on the pumpkin. BE CREATIVE!

-Projects must represent a book character from a book which would be appropriate for elementary school students. On the entry form you must write the title of the book and the name of the character.

-This is a home project and entries should be done mostly by the students, but parents or other family members are encouraged to help.

Do not write your name anywhere on the project. When you bring your pumpkin to Mrs. Cole, she will take your pumpkin and entry form and assign it a number.

All projects should be picked up by November 3rd. Those that remain past this date will be thrown away.

PRIZES: Staff will vote for their favorites in the following categories

Poster Contest Poster Contest for Harry Potter Week/Dance

Hey, Proud Tigers! We will be having a poster contest for our first ever Harry Potter Week! The Poster's theme shoudl be anything from the Harry Potter books/movies (lesser known storylines and characters would be awesome!) Make them magical (or muggle), unique, and creative. Try using unconventional materials to make your poster stand out! However, make sure your poster isn't too heavy as it will be hung in the hallway with tape. Do NOT forget to put your name and teacher on the back of your poster. If your poster wins and we don't know who it belongs to, you will not receive your prize!

Tickets can be used to buy concessions, Harry Potter sweet treats, sand art from the potions table, wands from Ollivander's Wand Shop, and butterbeer (Rootbeer's butterscotch likeness) from the Three Broomsticks during the dance.

Please have your posters turned in by Monday, October 23rd. However, if you can not get your poster in by Monday, we will still accept your entry if it is turned in by Tuesday morning.

Attention all Crabbe Muggles and Wizards: Ollivander's Wand Shop will be open for Harry Potter week, October 23-27 every day during lunch. Wands are hand crafted and come in several different colors. Price of the wands will be $1.

Solar Eclipse and Eye Safety Resources for August 21

A total solar eclipse is probably the most spectacular astronomical event that most people will experience in their lives. There is a great deal of interest in watching eclipses, but it must be done safely.  Because of this exceptional opportunity, there is concern that people will be more likely to stare at the Sun during this event.  Improper viewing of the Sun during an eclipse can result in eye injuries such as the development of "eclipse blindness" or retinal burns.

All Schools Closed Monday August 21

As a safety precaution, school will be closed on Monday, Aug 21, 2017 due to the Solar Eclipse. All after school activities will be suspended until 4:30 pm following the eclipse window. Students will make this day up on Friday March 16, 2018 which was a scheduled PD day.

All bids are to be sealed in an envelope and clearly identified as “BIDS-PIZZA”.  Instructional packets may be obtained at the Central Office of the District at 1820 Hickman Street, Ashland, Kentucky 41101 or online at www.ashland.kyschools.us.  All bids should be delivered or mailed to the address listed above.  Formal consideration of the bids will occur at a special called meeting in August of the Ashland Independent Board at the Central Office.

High Attendance Day!

September 20 is statewide “High Attendance Day” to emphasize that consistent attendance is essential for success in school. If in class regularly, a student is more likely to keep up with the daily lessons and assignments, and to reach academic performance benchmarks on time.  Let’s see if Ashland can have 100% attendance on September 20th !

Public hearing for tax levy

The Ashland Independent Board of Education will hold a public hearing in the Gymnasium of the Ashland Board of Education Office at 1820 Hickman Street on September 15, 2017, at 5:30pm to hear public comments regarding a proposed general fund tax levy of 67.8 cents on real property and 67.8 cents on personal property.

What's for Lunch?

The Ashland Independent School District Food Service Department is excited about the 2017- 2018 school year! We have adjusted all school menus to include tastier versions of entrees and added new items while still staying within the United State Department of Agriculture’s nutritional guidelines. All Ashland schools will be participating in the Community Eligibility Provision program. ALL students will receive ONE FREE breakfast and ONE FREE lunch at no charge each day.  Parents may still deposit money on their child’s meal account through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal which will allow students to purchase an additional meal, entrée, side, milk, and/or a’ la-carte item(s).  A second breakfast will be $1.50 and a second lunch will be $2.00.  Breakfast and Lunch menus are listed below.
